Where we hunt for mushrooms in the woods

Sunday we decided to hunt for mushrooms in the woods.

Yeah, so our life is pretty unplanned and random on the weekends.

We got up early, put on big rubber boots and sprayed ourselves down with tick repellent and headed out.

We knew to look around fallen trees and rotting stumps. This wouldn’t be a problem since a few years ago an ice storm pretty much demolished any type of forestry we had around here.

Our first inspection of a fallen/rotting stump found this guy. Most certainly not a mushroom, although very pretty and we had a great learning opportunity in trying to explain to A. James why she can’t just pick up any snake she sees. He wasn’t poisonous (maybe a black rat snake) but we didn't want her to get into a habit of just picking up any snake she sees.

The woods in the spring is so pretty.  Everything coming to life.  Like these little ferns.

Ava was most excited about this little patch of grass.
We found some mushrooms, but not what we were looking for.

My husband says, "Well, I am not seeing any mushrooms.  I guess it is time to go home.  Ava points down to our feet and says, "Daddy.  There are mushrooms."  Sure enough were were standing in a huge patch of mushrooms.  N. James literally had crushed one under his shoe.  We thought there were morels, but they ended up being a type of "false morel." Very tricky.  Either way, we still had a great time in the woods.

  1. I have been wondering when morels would be out! Maybe this nice rain will bring them out!

  2. I have Morels in my fridge from an excursion to Land Between the Lakes last weekend. Josh Colburn had an article in the Leader News week before last on hunting Morels.
